Maybelline Lasting Drama Gel Eyeliner Review

by mehak on November 9, 2010

in Eyeliner, Maybelline

A couple of months back, i was passing by this store and saw this huge advert for ‘Maybelline Lasting Drama 24hr Gel Eyeliner’ across the billboard. I was like OMG! I NEED to try that thing- i love gel eye liner (MAC Black track yr my superhero, and Coastal Scents Gel liner yr the robin to my batman) and knowing Maybelline i knew it wouldnt be that expensive. PLUS i had seen this gorgeous gorgeous plum shade in this on Temptalia and i so wanted it.

Well, it was a bit of an anticlimax …first of, no store seemed to stock it . It was either out of stock, or the stock had just not arrived from the company and i went on a wild goose chase and only got my hands on it some 2 weeks back and even then- no plum.. no sir. Just a solid black thats all.. no other shade available. You see, in India Maybelline makes it a point to NOT launch the best shades- i feel some screwed up evil people sit in the Maybelline meeting room and decide ‘ Ha! let them lust over foreign beauty blogs- they want plum- we will give them black!’ .  (Maybelline India if you are reading this, STOP DISCRIMINATING AGAINST US!!!).  Anyway, so i made the best of the situation and got the black one home and this is what i think about it….

What i like about the Maybelline Gel Liner

    • Texture :This is the perfect gel liner consistency- not dry and not too watery. Its a creamy consistency which is  such a dream to apply that even a novice would be applying this with ease and not be a klutz with it
    • The brush: Surprise Surprise- the brush that this comes with is actually quite nice for me. I like the length of the handle, i like the thickness of the bristles and it feels soft
    • The colour: I like matte gel liners, im not a glossy black eye liner girl so love love love  the matt blackness this gives. Its a pretty intense black , when its wet its unbelievably intense, but once dry it softens a bit though even then, the colour payoff is brilliant.
    • Tightlining: This is fantastic, for tightlining- i dont know what it is exactly but it is so easy to push this product in when yr tightlining . I like the effect it gives and its not uncomfortable to use either
    • Smudge proof: Once this dries, it is very smudgeproof. I have a dark circle issue so that is a MUST have for me..i need something thats not going to go all smudgey on me
    • Packaging: The packaging is really quite classy actually. I love the black box which contains the actual pot and the brush.  Very high end feel to it.Maybelline has been stepping up the game in the packaging arena recently..

What i dont like about the Maybelline Gel Liner

    • Waterline issue1: This did NOT work on my waterline. Infact it irritated my eyes when i used it on my waterline and made them itchy:(
    • Waterline issue 2: Also, on the waterline it doesnt go on opaque- its kinda translucent so you need to go over it two times to get the desired blackness which is annoying. This is only on the waterline though.
    • Waterline issue 3: Again- on the waterline it did not last too long. Kind of evaporated  \within 6 hours so its a shame. It does however last for a long time if you are lining the upper lash line
    • There is a tinnny amount of product. The actual pot is so small i really wonder how long it would last with everyday use

    Other Info:

Price:  Rs 375/- for the liner AND the brush (I think its quite a deal honestly)
Will i Repurchase: I will definitely get other colours if they are launched, but since this didnt work for my waterline i might have to think before repurchasing the black one.
Final verdict: 3/5 – If you are new to gel liners , the Maybelline Gel Liner is definitely a great budget  option for you to explore before buying any high end ones. If you do have sensitive eyes like me and plan to use this on the waterline, you wont be blown away by it.

That's very interesting! I haven't seen these around yet. I love gel liners. I have a Bobbi Brown, a MAC one and a NYX one. They all work great as an eyeshadow base too

I too wanted this in Plum! & even I hate Maybelline for their discriminatory practices. They never launch their mascaras in brown over here, black tends to look a little harsh on me..

I wish this cute lil pot had worked out as well for me as it has for you, I use it for tightlining only. Don't like the way it looks on my lash line, but it is a lovely product. I wld def get this in plum if I could :)

Inky Pinky November 13, 2010 at 6:06 am

Very informative! I've never used gel liners and have absolutely no idea what a waterline is,duh! :P
But would surely give a try on ur recommendation :)

    a!k0 November 14, 2010 at 9:32 pm

You're not alone in this…here they seem to ONLY promote the brown and black and I KNOW Maybelline have other wonderful colors. I want them!!! I should give this a try then, everyone says it is pretty good. And it's on sale now :P

    Shikhs December 4, 2010 at 12:48 pm

I m using Maybelline gel liner and simply simply loving it …..I wanna know how to clean the brush that comes with it and how often?

    Ere December 17, 2010 at 9:20 am

Eyeliner is one of the first beauty tools I bought: I thought they would help to look like natural and redefine my eyes. Gel liners are the best.
    organic lipsticks

    Magali February 14, 2011 at 9:31 pm

This is a great review & I will definitely buy this when I finish my Lakme eye artist! Also, don't mean to alarm you but the comment above mine is definitely spam. :)

    PeachesandBlush February 15, 2011 at 6:24 am

@Shikhs- clean it with shampoo (mild shampoo) , and i would do it about once in every two – three times.

@magali- thanks or lettng me know..deleted it..

    Meena May 30, 2012 at 5:19 pm

    mehak May 30, 2012 at 5:50 pm

You can but it stings the eye…other gel liners can be use.d

    Maria June 22, 2012 at 4:17 am

Is this gel eyeliner dries up quickly? How long it lasts before it dries?

    bhavna February 25, 2013 at 11:39 pm

any other ideas about cleaning the brush..
the shampoo idea isnt really working 4 me… :-)
