Comparison of Budget Indian Liquid Eyeliners

Guest Post by CSP Ballal (Light Skin tone, Normal to Dry Skin)

Comparing anything with any other thing is every women’s birth right. It is found in a lady’s blood. So, todays target is eyeliners- to be specific lets restrict this to Budget eyeliners from Indian Brands– less than 200Rs ok?! I have tried quite a few eyeliners from various brands, Lakme, Elle 18, Lotus, Streetwear, Revlon, Maybelline, ok, that’s it. It would be very unfair I do not hold a comparison. At this point of time my criteria to compare would be those brands which are from our own country. Thus eligible eyeliners from my stash are:

–          Lakme High Definition Eyeliner

–          Lotus Herbals Opulence Botanical Eye Liner

–          Lakme Insta – Liner Water Resistant Eyeliner

–          Elle 18 Black Out Liner

Price: Price is one of the main characteristics of a product, at least in India. Pricewise, Elle 18 wins.

Lakme High Definition Eyeliner: Rs. 125

Lotus Herbals Opulence Botanical Eye Liner: Rs.195

Lakme Insta – Liner Water Resistant Eyeliner: Rs. 75

Elle 18 Black Out Liner: Rs. 65

Brush Type: Some have a hold on bristles type of brush and some like felt tip applicator. I opt for bristles. And my vote for Lakme Insta – Liner Water Resistant Eyeliner for the quality of brush it comes with.

Lakme High Definition Eyeliner: Felt tip applicator brush

Lotus Herbals Opulence Botanical Eye Liner: Felt tip applicator brush

Lakme Insta – Liner Water Resistant Eyeliner: Hairy bristles type of brush

Elle 18 Black Out Liner: Very fine bristles type of brush

Gliding of Applicator: This category is a personal choice. The ease of application depends on ones expertise. Personally i prefer a brush with bristles instead of a felt tip and a handle with a shorter length – i feel it provides a better glide.. I again vote for Lakme Insta – Liner Water Resistant Eyeliner.

Lakme High Definition Eyeliner: Very difficult

Lotus Herbals Opulence Botanical Eye Liner: Average gliding

Lakme Insta – Liner Water Resistant Eyeliner: Very easy

Elle 18 Black Out Liner: Very easy

Applicator length: The length of the applicator plays a very important role in making the perfect outline on the upper lash line. Very elongated applicator stick is very trouble some to work out with. Short applicators gives a perfect grip to apply the liner. My vote for short applicator stick.

Lakme High Definition Eyeliner: Medium length

Lotus Herbals Opulence Botanical Eye Liner: Short Length

Lakme Insta – Liner Water Resistant Eyeliner: Short Length

Elle 18 Black Out Liner: Short Length

Eyeliner Texture: The shiny texture gives a very dark and attractive outline to your eyes. Matte texture gives a very dull finish to the liner and does not stand out in its color. I prefer dark sheen texture in the eyeliner I use. Lakme Insta – Liner Water Resistant Eyeliner is the darkest out of the lot I am comparing.

Lakme High Definition Eyeliner: Matte

Lotus Herbals Opulence Botanical Eye Liner: Matte

Lakme Insta – Liner Water Resistant Eyeliner: Sheen

Elle 18 Black Out Liner: Matte

Eyeliner Darkness: I prefer very dark colored liner. And here again my choice is Lakme Insta – Liner Water Resistant Eyeline.

Lakme High Definition Eyeliner: Very dark

Lotus Herbals Opulence Botanical Eye Liner: Medium dark

Lakme Insta – Liner Water Resistant Eyeliner: Very dark

Elle 18 Black Out Liner: Very dark

From top to bottom-Swatches are in the order of the names written above

Chipping: In my experience, matte textured eyeliners usually chips off very easily.

Lakme High Definition Eyeliner: Does not chip off very soon. But, by the end of the day the line would be broken.

Lotus Herbals Opulence Botanical Eye Liner: Easily chips off

Lakme Insta – Liner Water Resistant Eyeliner: Does not chip

Elle 18 Black Out Liner: Easily chips off

Cleansing: Matte textured eyeliners are easy to clean off. Wash your face, and the eyeliner vanishes off with water. But dark waxy eyeliners that stay intact for long leave behind a panda eye when tried to rinse off. A remover/oil is a must in removing such eyeliners. Under this category, Elle 18 eyeliner wins the entire vote..

Lakme High Definition Eyeliner: Easily cleans off with water

Lotus Herbals Opulence Botanical Eye Liner: Easily cleans off with water

Lakme Insta – Liner Water Resistant Eyeliner: Requires remover/oil to clean off

Elle 18 Black Out Liner: Easily cleans off with water

On the whole, I choose Lakme Insta – Liner Water Resistant Eyeliner.

(Editors Note: Thanks for the super informative post CSP!! I have the Lakme Insta Liner with me always- its just one that iv been using since i was like 15!! So im really comfortable with it and since its so affordable, i make sure i have one with me incase the more expensive gel liners run out)

I have the Elle 18 one…it’s what I use almost daily. I’ve tried Lakme’s kajal pencil (the old one) and eye artist pen but somehow never tried their liquid liners. Even before this Colour bomb range was launched, I had Elle 18’s old liquid liner (the one which came in the same type of bottle as their old nail paints). I think it was one of the first makeup products I used.
Agree with u on the chipping part – and also, the brush isn’t great – but I still love it. :)

I’m so glad the only one eyeliner I use is found to be the best in this post! Lakme eyeliner is pretty long lasting (I have it on for almost the entire day), and it truly is water-proof. Worth every penny!
