Vimi Joshi’s Tutorial on the MAC Ore Inspired Trend + Exclusive Interview

One of the most fun parts of the Mac Presentation in Dubai was watching Vimi Joshi work her makeup  magic on a model, showing us how to rock  “Ore Inspired” which is one of four Mac Trends for Spring Summer 2012! It was one of the times i wished i was an octopus (or i had minnions like Blair Waldorf) , because there was so much to do- watch the makeup, click photos, write down what she was saying, remember the product names, stare at the stunning model . Phew ! I somehow managed to do atleast some of that, so pardon me if the photographs below are not HD quality!

Step 1: Prep your skin

Products: Mac Prep & Prime Fortified Skin Enhancer, Mac Care Blend Essential Oils, Water Based MOisturizers

The model’s skin was  given an extra dewy factor by prepping it before hand (though she does have stunning skin herself). Unfortunately, this part was not shown to us, but using Mac Prep and Prime Fortified Skin Enhancer (Mac Prime Focus Collection) , along with some Moisturizers, and even Mac Care Blend Essential Oils, you can achieve the same dewy look.

Step 2: Base and Cheek Color

Products : Mac Prep & Prime BB Cream on face, Mac Mineralize Concealer in darker tone on Cheeks

Vimi used a fluffy brush to blend the Mac BB Cream (Indian Launch date TBA ) all over the model. What was also interesting is that she said this season, you can bring out foundations that are darker in skin color than your own skin and use those to create dimension. For example, use a darker foundation on the edges of the face, and the lighter foundation in the centre to give it a 3 dimensional look. She also used a concealer as a blush!!!! She used a warm, almost orange toned Mac Mineralize Concealer ( Indian Launch date TBA) as a cream blush to add warmnth to the cheeks !

That is a concealer on her cheeks !!! Genius!

Step 3: Highlights

Products Used: Mac Metal X Cream Eyeshadow

Metal X Cream Eyeshadow is something i am buying FO SHO!!! Vimi used this along the cheek bone and just under the eyebrows to create a stunning highlight. Who knew cream eyeshadows could double up as highlighters?. Highlighting was done on the cheeks, under the eyebrows, on the chin but the nose was kept matte.

Notice that gorgeous highlight on the cheek bone extending towards the eye?

Step 4: Eyes

Products Used: Mac Reflex Gold Glitter (PRO Product), Mac Teddy Eye Kohl (Permanent Product)

Mac Glitter in Reflex Gold was very softly  used on the eyes. Remember this trend is all about oranges, golds and metallics!! This was patted down very subtly-the idea was not to create a full blown glitter fest, but to get pretty sparkles as you eyelid catches the light. Vimi said she was going to create a soft smokey eye, so i was surprised to see just how little eyeshadow was used. Essentially, she created the smokey-ness with a thick stroke of Mac Teddy (one of my favourites)!!!

Above: Vimi patting down Mac Reflex Gold, and Below: With Mac Teddy Eye Kohl

Step 5 : Lips

Product Used: Mac Lsutreglass  in Ornamental (Permanent Product)

Mac Ornamental- which is a stunning shimmery, reddish copper lustreglass was used on the lips. I thought it kind of brought the entire look together dont you think? I would have never thought of picking up something like Ornamental because its this brownish copper color when swatched, but look how stunning that looks on her? Vimi says harsh lip liner is out, and almost stained lip is in!

This is what Vimi Joshi described as “Kim Kardashian leaving Studio 54”- LOVE that description!

Exclusive Interview with Vimi Joshi- Mac Senior Artist for Middle East & Asia

Post the presentation, Vimi sat down with us and answered some burning, makeup questions ;)

Vimi : “Did you enjoy the presentation?”

Me : ” LOVED it !!!!  Specially your Ore Inspired look . Infact, if i had to ask you to sum up this season in a line what would you say”

Vimi: “I would say beauty is back !! Its all about glowing, dewy, stunning skin- its about color, its about metallics and its about romance”

Me  : “You spoke about the Neon trend which incorporates big, bright colors. A lot of us India are not comfortable with color as such, so how do you think we can be Neon-trendy in everyday life”

Vimi:  “Oh well in presentations, we always tend to create a statement, hence the overly brights. But Neon is essentially about color- you can do a soft baby pink lip and maybe a  subtle wash of green on the eyes and still be trendy! Or you can create a statement with a bright lip”

Me : “Any particular bright  lip colors that would especially suit warmer, Indian Skin tones? “

Vimi ” Mac Impassioned Lipstick, Mac Morange Lipstick, Mac Girl about Town Lipstick

Me ”  Definitely will check those out. I absolutely love that dewy skin is in this season, what are some of the Mac Products that you think can be used to achieve that”

Vimi “Oh – use a water based moisturizer, invest in MAC Fix Plus . Blend a touch of  Mac Care Blend oil into your moisturizer to make sure your skin looks hydrated !!! Also definitely invest in Mac Primers. Its all about Priming your skin this season”

Me : “Its amazing that Primer is a household name now, and 5 years back no one even knew they existed right? Anyway Since we are on the subject of skin, any tips on choosing the right  foundation?

Vimi : Well, here is the thing.  This season its kind of about getting different shades of foundation and using them to create a 3d look. The dark shade of foundation should match your neck and edge of your face and should be applied there. The medium shade  should  match your cheek bones and be applied there. The lightest would  color in the rest of your face.

Me ” So that means we can get all our old unused foundations out and try and see if we can work with them!!!!!.You travel the world Vimi and you spoke about women from all across the middle east during the presentation, what word of advice would you give Indian women”

Vimi ” Well for this season – my advice is

1. Keep your skin supple and hydrated.

2. Have Fun with color- dont be afraid to experiment.

3. Experiment with Bronzing in a new sense- its more about Metallic Bronzing this season which is what the Ore inspired trend is about

4. Enjoy the  ‘girly-ness’of beauty because romance and softness is back !!

Me: ” Which of these trends do you think  we Indian Brides can incorporate into our looks?

Vimi: Well Ore inspired would be a good look for brides! For me, a bride should look like herself, just with a radiant glow ! So all the golden metallics of ore inspired as well as the dewyness of the skin would be perfect for that!

Me :  ” Any  MAC Must Haves for your makeup bag this season”?

Vimi  : “Must have Mac products are-

  • Mac Fix Plus (Permanent)
  • Mac Girl About Town Lipstick (Permanent)
  • Mac Auto De Blue Eye Pencil
  • Mac BB Cream (Its available in Dubai Duty Free)  but if you cant have this then you should invest in Mac Mineralized Concealers
  • Mac Primers!!!
Me :  “Any parting thoughts on Beauty ???”
Vimi :  “Creativity and Beauty s such a subjective concept!! All i can say is Celebrate Yourself !! Whoever you are- Celebrate yourself !”

What a gorgeous look! The tips are really useful! Just a small correction, I think the eye pencil is Auto de bleu, I have seen it in store, its a warm deep blue, like a deeper version of Siahi fluidline.

Vanity April 5, 2012 at 10:32 pm

just a little question ms.Mac journalist, i so want fix plus in my kitty and all the dewiness with cream products but my skin is super oily in summers. so ow to look dewy and not shiny?

mehak April 5, 2012 at 10:40 pm

Helooosssss Ansh! I think for oily skin girls, Fix plus is half the battle won, because it preps your skin, and still absorbs moisture so when u apply yr foundation, yv already got an oil free base and it prevents skin from looking greasy. On top of that u just need a very light can do the dewy bit only on the cheeks…powder the nose and everything else..Thats what Vimi Joshi said- powder everything except cheeks!
My 2 cents !!!

chandana April 6, 2012 at 2:59 pm

lovely post.. i liked the dewy skin. always wanted to have dewy skin makeup like that. do we have to use the mac blend oil in water based moisturiser/ any particular moisturiser u recommend(my skin is combination) and shouls we use mac fix plus after moisturiser and before foundation? phew… many queiries..

mehak April 7, 2012 at 1:16 am

Fix plus is general used after your makeup to “fix it in place’, but people also use it sometimes mixed in with foundation. As for the oils, Vimi recommends mixing them with your foundation..
