Bridal Lehengas of 2012: Bridal, Mehendi & Sangeet Lehengas I Loved

by mehak on January 2, 2013

in Bridal Blog, Bridal fashion

2012 was the year of ‘Bridal’ stuff on P&B, and after months of searching, viewing photos, shopping with clients, or just indulging myself here are pictures of what stole my heart in 2012 .Remember, if you are an NRI reading this, you should check  out our Bridal Shopping service (contact me at to know more about how this shopping service can help you- whether you are coming down toIndia or not !

*The Horizontal Bands  Bridal Lehengas

Traditionally, lehengas have always had work done vertically across different kali’s , but 2012 was really the year of ‘ Horizontal’  for some reason. Multicolored horizontal bands of work, in various patterns and textures really jumped out wherever i went. This Anamika Khanna outfit is the classic example of that trend- a gorgeous ink blue and hot pink with gold detailing.

The Sharara/ Gharara Trend for Sangeet and Engagement Lehengas

Sharara’s and Gharara’s ruled the Sangeet Lehenga world.  They were literally EVERYWHERE from the famous Manish Malhotra Katrina Kaif replica’s , to the more traditional Charu Parasher ones, the skirt with the long top silhouette really soared to popularity, and possibly because its such a flattering style on pretty much all body types ! I also think 2012 was sort of the year of ‘ Pakistani’  styles in Indian fashion- right from Pallazo style suits , to the more Nikah silhouettes like above.

The Return to Basic Bridal Lehengas

This gorgeous , classic red and white lehenga by a studio in Delhi , is just a little whiff of the ” Return to Basics” Trend like i like to call it. The overly ornate, crystal embellishments took a backseat, the heavy embroidery took a back seat, and the classic red and white lehenga but with a more modern form, a contrasting choli and a simple dupatta was back in vogue and i absolutely loved it. This particular piece is actually one of my absolute favourites.

The Pastel lehengas

With the choice of so many brides preferring to have morning/ afternoon pheras before reception, softer colors of lehengas like these two gorgeous pieces by a Mumbai Designer Duo called Jade were the choice of many. I absolutely adore the mint green one on the right ! So pretty! But so expensive !

Mehendi outfits

I ADORED all the gorgeous, multicolored , bright mehendi outfits that everyone wore. From DIY, to ready made i really wish i had out more thought into my own mehendi outfit after seeing all the cute options available.

Floral Bridal Lehenga

Pallavi Jaikishan brought Floral Back , and i fell for it hook line and sinker. So much so that my own lehenga was floral patterned . It wasnt a pallavi jaikishan, but hey it will do ! ;)

LOVED Sabya’s recent range of simple, banarsi lehenga skirts with ornate, jewelled blouses. Who needs jewellery when your blouse has a ton of jewels on it itself. It was just so unique and different, and had this come out when i was buying my sangeet outfit, i would have definitely opted for this.

Love the colors, a big fan of the Paisley pattern and adore the yellow dupatta. I think this would look really gorgeous as an anarkali for a day wedding as well!

Deepti January 2, 2013 at 2:35 pm

hey Mehak, how is that pink and yellow lehenga is for? and where the ‘return to basics’ lehenga shop is located in delhi only if you can tell?

Shikha January 2, 2013 at 3:10 pm

thedelhibride January 2, 2013 at 3:30 pm

I discovered JADE very recently, and absolutely love their designs as well!!! Have been drooling over their lehengas. Loveee the first lehenga as well – overly ornate, but the colors are gorgeous!

mehak January 2, 2013 at 3:31 pm

Yeah…Jade is so expensive though :( Wish it were more affordable.

I too opted for a pastel lehenga was I happy with my decision.

Shang J. January 2, 2013 at 7:56 pm

I am loving the pink lehenga above. And you look oh-so beautiful in your floral lehenga. ♥

Sukanya January 2, 2013 at 8:25 pm

i love the pastel green one.. am thinking of getting similar one stitched ! Now only if I can find the fabrics and a decent tailor in Kolkata ! sigh *

TheBengaliBride January 2, 2013 at 10:19 pm

Love all the lehengas ! Especially the benarasi skirt by Sabyasachi. Btw, I am so glad that I stumbled upon your blog and found out more about DIY Lehengas for Mehendi. It’s so much more fun to opt for DIY light lehengas!

MissBoPeep January 3, 2013 at 12:04 am

OMG!! They are to die for. All the best Mehak with your venture. Its nothing short of a noble cause of actually saving the bride from all the confusion. Where were you when I got married?

Bhumika January 3, 2013 at 1:41 am

Horizontal Bands and Gharara do look do the pastels and florals..

Josie January 3, 2013 at 11:42 am

I’m a South Indian Christian.Usually for wedding, girls usally wear white saris or gowns but I would love/thinking of wearing a lehenga. Do you it’s possible to get a white/cream lehenga. If I wear something else, they would literally chase me out of the church with a broom.LOL
Anyway, I’m not marrying anytime soon but for some reason I’m really interested in bridal stuff, probably because of this blog. :)

Crazy Indian Bride January 4, 2013 at 8:25 pm

Sorry but I am butting in…saw this really amazing white lehengha at Frountier Bazaar (in karol Bagh, Delhi) was trying to find someone to recommend it too :P

You do get a lot of whites and cream colored lehenga these days, specially since pastels are so ‘in’.

mehak January 4, 2013 at 10:54 pm

Josie , you can get a lehenga made in ANY colr you want. white. cream. gold. even black !

Shriya January 3, 2013 at 2:10 pm

Wow such a lovely collection ! I loved that classic white and red lehenga ! btw You’re lookin absolutely stunning :)

Desi Girl January 3, 2013 at 4:01 pm

Any idea how much the pink sharara costs?? Luv it….. :)

Niesha January 3, 2013 at 4:57 pm

All of them are drool worthy, but the last one is just fabulous…<3

SweetAndBitter January 3, 2013 at 5:36 pm

sorry for the basic question but what is Sharara’s and Gharara’s????

In our tradition we do not have lehengas and u are my Guru in that so, please let me know :D

mehak January 4, 2013 at 1:29 pm

Sharara is like a long top that comes till your thigh, and a split divided skirt. Dont know how to explain it really, but flared pants at the bottom.
Gharara is the same thing/ sometimes the flared pants are replaced by a skirt…

Ashika January 3, 2013 at 7:02 pm

these outfits are gorrrrrrrrrr-juss!!!

i recently saw a bride with the horizontal style bands skirt and fell in love with it instantly! been trying to find a similar style but i cant find it anywhere on the web… im from south africa so our choices are somewhat limited… i think il hav to make a trip to India to find my dream wedding lehenga… :)

mehak January 3, 2013 at 10:02 pm

no probs..keep going the bridal and lehenga posts..these are different and like them

Shruti January 4, 2013 at 2:11 pm

Hello Mehak…I know it would sound stupid but do you think I could find a bridal Lehenga for under 30K in Delhi..As you can make out I’m a bride -to-be with a lot of dreams but not much money..

mehak January 4, 2013 at 2:54 pm

Hi Shurti,
Ofcourse you can….the kinds iv posted above dont come within 30K , but at no point of time should you feel that you wont get a gorgeous lehenga just because your budget is low. My suggestion would be to either custom make your lehenga through boutiques in Chandni Chowk, or give roop saris a visit in south ex.

Shruti January 4, 2013 at 5:43 pm

Thanks a lot!I have read your post on where to shop for bridal lehengas in Delhi…and the chandni chowk ones that you mentioned in there are the ones tht you’re talking about?

mehak January 4, 2013 at 7:37 pm

No Shruti. Those are expensive….

Shruti January 4, 2013 at 10:58 pm

Okay…Thanks anyway for your suggestion…I was dejected but your words meant a lot

Parul January 4, 2013 at 3:09 pm

Mufeeda February 27, 2013 at 2:52 am

Hey Mehak
The first pic that you’ve posted here, is it like a lot of horizontal fabric panels/strips sewn together? Or is it just the work/karigari done that way?
I have been hunting for the perfect lehenga design and I had found a similar design few days ago which I have my heart set on. But I am really unsure about how to get it made.
