P&B Exclusive: Mac Senior Artist Sonic Sarwate Shares Tips, Products & Trends for Spring/Summer 2013

For Spring/Summer 2013, MAC Cosmetics has announced four distinct trends that are in vogue this season. P&B asked MAC Senior Artist Sonic Sarwate to decode these trends for us, and tell us what we should be stocking up on this summer!

The four MAC Trends for Spring /Summer 2013 are:

Signature : The Purity of perfectly pared back skin

Buffed in Mineralize Moisture SPF 15 Foundation, and delicately shaped and brought to life
with the most subtle, sensitive techniques: concealers just a couple of shades darker than
the skin tone, emollient glows replicated with pearl Cream Colour Base in Shell or Luna,
skin-identical pigments put in around the eye.

Nu-ance :Shades of highly pigmented pastels from turquoise and lemon to silver and translucently dark metallics

Beauty has had a “palette cleanse” in its most literal sense this season, as clean,
popping pastels express a modern romance with paler colour. Distinct from last season’s
muted exploration of colour, SS2013’s more lucid stance takes the runway’s enduring
interest in vivid digital prints and twists them into a fresh look at wearing colour
that is contemporary in its clean purity.

Puri-Tan:  A monochromatic Bedouin bronze, blurred on the eyes and bone structure

The features are brought out in a palette of desert shades that reference Californian girls via a 60’s and Bedouin vision, transparently tinted in washes of cream colour adding a sophisticated monochrome feel to the face that taps into a womanly, photographic spirit akin to the femininity channelled by Peter Lindberg, Herb Ritts and Bruce Weber
Schi-chedelic: Purist Color Blocked on Lids and Lips

Minimalist. Reductionist. Singular. The graphic statement gets a 60’s spin this season
(without resorting to a redux). Op-arty colour feels gestural, confidently committed and effortlessly cool, never bourgeois or overstated. Color with Conviction

One on One With Sonic Sarwate: Senior Makeup Artist for MAC India

P&B:  Hi Sonic!!! Just wanted to hear your two cents on the trendsthis season. I know S/S12 could be summed up in two words- femininty and romance, is that something we are continuing to see this year as well?

Sonic: “MINIMALISM is the mantra for all the trends this season! Minimalistic use of products to create maximum impact. It’s about going back to basic and bringing the natural face forward with use of makeup”

P&B: So  What are some of the  must have products this Spring /Summer for you?

Sonic :

i.     MAC Prep +Prime Natural Radiance is a key product to achieve beautiful radiant skin. It has refined gold particles that brighten the skin and gives the desired glow.

ii.     MAC pigment in silver is a great product that will help you to change in texture of any eye shadow and add that frost that will make it modern

iii.     Bright pop colors for lips are big trend for the season so MAC Lipstick in So Chaud, Girl About town, Impassioned, Candy Yum Yum are perfect colors to pick.

iv.     MAC Mineralize Skinfinish is a super product which will help you to achieve that natural looking tan.

v.     Mineralize Moisture Fluid Foundation is a techno-age formula that provides flawless complexion without looking make-upy!

P&B: A lot of skin and base products there! I noticed the Signature look was about ‘Makeup that looks like skin’ . Any tips on the correct way for applying your base to make sure it looks natural and in keeping with the Signature trend? Any tips of choosing the correct base?

Sonic: ” Modern make up is about getting the look that does not look like makeup. Choose products that mimic skin texture as close as possible.

Skincare use before makeup and how you prep your skin before foundation can make all the difference. Moisturize you skin well and use MAC Prep+Prime Natural Radiance to get the perfect smooth finish. Add a corrector and a concealer to conceal any discolouration, if any. Choose a foundation that the closest match to your skin colour for flawless finish. Use powder wherever needed to mattify excessive shine. Highlight the cheekbones with MAC Cream Color base in Hush for creamy complexion.”

P&B: Which of these trends do you  think can seamlessly be incorporated into Indian bridal looks?

Sonic: “Trends are to give guidelines and can be mixed and match for various looks. Always choose elements that work best for your look and incorporate them in your makeup. Brides can definitely use metallic eye shadows and bright lip colors also work best with Indian bridal outfits. So you can easily adapt Sci-chedelic or Nu-ance trends of this season. Also thes e days some brides like to keep their makeup minimal and like natural looking they can adapt Sig-nature or Puri-tan trend, which is all about the beautiful skin.”

I am thinking of buy MSF and Girl about town as soon as I near a MAC store. Good to hear they are trends. Posting in interiors have some makeup drawbacks as well :(
And I think minimalist has always been a big trend. Its one way you can keep yourself and the menfolk happy… or else the moment they see color its always too much… :)
