Kryolan Ultra Foundation (3) Kryolan Ultra Foundation: Swatches & Review

Guest Review By Priya R (Light Skin tone, dry-combination type (Oily T-Zone))

How hard it is  to find that perfect foundation for your skin?  After swatching, trying many and even buying a few of them, I haven’t found my perfect HG foundation yet but one of the ones i tried in my search for my HG is the  Kryolan Ultra Foundation.

Product Description:

Ultra Foundation is a cream foundation specially formulated for the most demanding make-up expectations. As a result of its excellent covering quality, Ultra Foundation is also effective as a corrective make-up. Transparent application of Ultra Foundation is also suitable for photographic work. Its matt finish provides models with a naturally attractive appearance. The Ultra Foundation formulation contains advanced ingredients that are recognised for particularly good skin compatibility. This formulation contains no mineral oil, to assure that the skin readily absorbs the make-up. This foundation is available in a wide range of more than 70 shades

My Views

Kryolan Ultra Foundation comes in varieties of packaging – you can buy a single refill or an individual packaging or a palette of 12 shades. Since foundations can be a tricky bet I decided to pick up the single refill for trial before investing in the full size product. Kryolan Ultra Foundation is a cream based foundation and works well on my dry-combination skin. It does not leave behind dry patches on the dry area of my skin and with a dusting of translucent powder on my T-Zone it stays oil-free for few hours. Ultra Foundation is cream based foundation with a very thick consistency and applying it with a brush or fingers needs time to ensure it covers all the areas evenly and blends in properly. The best way to apply it is with fingers, the warmness helps in melting the thick cream however, I prefer using my trusted Inglot Foundation Brush which does a decent job and provides streak free application.

The shade I picked up is OB3, which suits my skin tone well (70%) but I won’t call it my perfect match. The yellow undertones it has in it is compatible with Indian skin tones but it is a little too  yellow on my skin. In the pan shade OB3 might look a little dark but when swatched on hands or when I apply it on my skin, it sinks in properly and it adapts to my skintone within a minute or so. Coverage is medium and it can be layered for full coverage and because of the thick consistency I fear it might look cakey. I generally layer it twice and it gives about medium coverage and hides light blemishes, scars etc and to an extent covers the under eye dark circles as well. I generally skip concealer when I apply this as I do not have heavy dark circles.

I had purchased Kryolan Ultra Foundation somewhere around winters and it worked well for me then. It remains fresh on my skin for almost 6 hours and but my T-Zone started to shine (reflecting oiliness) within 3 hours hence it needs a touch up of powder. It does not work on my skin during summers, as my skin tends to get oilier in humid conditions. So it’s a strict no-no for me in summers but for the rest of the year it works well.  The finish is claimed to be matte as per their site but it gives dewy finish to the skin.

These single refills are great for trial purpose but it is kind of difficult to store, since it is plastic based it cannot be stored in magnetic palette and it has to be kept in plastic case it comes in which is easily prone to attract dirt & dust. And because of this it is not travel friendly either.

Kryolan Ultra Foundation (4)Kryolan Ultra Foundation (5)Kryolan Ultra Foundation (6)Kryolan Ultra Foundation (2)Kryolan Ultra Foundation

  1. Provides medium to full coverage
  2. 12 shades available in India
  3. Best suited for Dry/Combination skin type
  4. Gives dewy finish
  5. Lasts for about 6 hours
  6. Available in refills & full sized packaging
  7. Covers blemishes, scars and discoloration to an extent

  1. Consistency of the cream foundation is really thick and requires time to blend in evenly
  2. Does not work during humid hot climate
  3. Claims to give matte finish but it gives dewy look
  4. Single refill packaging is dust prone and not travel safe
  5. It requires powder touch up every few hours hence not a long stay foundation

Rating: B

Price: Rs. 900 (Rs. 300 for refills)

RecommendationKryolan Ultra Foundation is decent product which provides about medium to full coverage and is best suited for dry/combination skin type since it is cream based. However, the thick texture of cream is little difficult to work with and requires extra care in blending it evenly on skin. It is a good foundation but not my HG foundation…My search continues!

Great Review :) and its good to see a foundation in refills but that may not be travel friendly.

Priya July 7, 2013 at 10:59 pm

it is not only bad for travels… storing itself in a shelf is an issue! wish it could be stored in any magnetic palette.

Kryolan is good for professional use, but I find it too heavy for day to day wear.
Nice review.

Priya July 8, 2013 at 2:03 pm

That’s true… Not a daily wear foundation! Definitely occasionally !

Seems like a decent foundation. Pity it wouldn’t suit my oily skin :(
