salon and academy Review of Professional Makeup Course At Chandni Singh Salon & Academy

Guest Post By Hair & Makeup Artist Tejasvini Chander

Having already trained to do hair and makeup for fashion and photography at the London College of Fashion, I found myself a little lost when it came to doing things on the Indian skin and on the bridal front. It was around this time that I came across Chandni Singh’s website and was in awe of her entire portfolio. I instantly knew that I perfectly identified with her style of doing brides. I loved how they all looked elegantly done up without being garish or cakey.

As luck would have it, I found that she had a course for me at her salon & academy in the New Friends Colony Community Centre market in New Delhi. Priced at Rs. 75,000/- per person, the course ran for four days a week, for four weeks. She has no more than ten students at a time, which allows her to attend to each student on a personal level on a daily basis. Classes began around 10.30 am and went on till Lunch time which made it quite convenient for most girls in my class to juggle between errands, familial obligations and gearing up to be a Professional Makeup Artist.

Chandni’s course did not provide a kit for professional use but she is well equipped with all the amazing brands of makeup and brushes like MAC, Sephora, Lancome, NYX, Makeup Forever, Kryolan, etc. The course allows you to get a feel of a wide variety of products and find what you would be the most comfortable using.

Having been in the industry for over eight years and by the virtue of all her associations with international makeup brands, Chandni is like an encyclopedia of products. I never buy anything new for my kit without seeking her advice on the brand and its effects on various skin types. I feel if you have the right products and tools, half the battle is won! I found the course to be of such great help in understanding the cosmetic market of Delhi.

Her methodology is to demonstrate and make her students theoretically grasp the skills on alternate days while the other days are meant for putting into practice, whatever you learnt the day before. This makes the course pretty hands on. She also encourages taking notes.

The course encompasses the best of both worlds. I found myself imbibing sensibilities that combine the contemporary trends of the west along with the traditional Indian bridal styles. I believe that I can cater to the modern Indian women and give them those eyes and lips that they see on the runway, in a way that will suit their Indian skin tones.

The one thing about the course that really got me the exposure I needed, was accompanying Chandni to her shoots and watching her do the whole thing. It just added so much meaning to the whole learning process and gave me a taste of the real world. Seeing her work ethic with the models and the brides made me understand how one is different from the other and yet so similar.

After having completed this course, I went out in the industry looking for work and was pleasantly surprised to find that people responded very well to the fact that I trained under Chandni. I also got in touch with various big photographers who Chandni referred me to and thus began building a portfolio by doing test shoots with their students/assistants.

The whole experience is made even better when you have a really friendly and approachable teacher like Chandni who makes the environment very relaxed and conducive for bringing out the best artist in you.

The course was expensive to begin with but it wasn’t very long before I recovered what I paid.

Price: Rs 75000/-

Recommendation: The Professional Makeup Course by Chandni Singh not only equips a person to become a great bridal makeup artist, but also prepares one to undertake the contemperary trends of the west. It gives you the exposure and backing you need to start off on your own as a makeup artist and though the course may be expensive, if you are serious about becoming a makeup artist..I definitely recommend it.
