salon and academy Review of Professional Makeup Course At Chandni Singh Salon & Academy

Guest Post By Hair & Makeup Artist Tejasvini Chander

Having already trained to do hair and makeup for fashion and photography at the London College of Fashion, I found myself a little lost when it came to doing things on the Indian skin and on the bridal front. It was around this time that I came across Chandni Singh’s website and was in awe of her entire portfolio. I instantly knew that I perfectly identified with her style of doing brides. I loved how they all looked elegantly done up without being garish or cakey.

As luck would have it, I found that she had a course for me at her salon & academy in the New Friends Colony Community Centre market in New Delhi. Priced at Rs. 75,000/- per person, the course ran for four days a week, for four weeks. She has no more than ten students at a time, which allows her to attend to each student on a personal level on a daily basis. Classes began around 10.30 am and went on till Lunch time which made it quite convenient for most girls in my class to juggle between errands, familial obligations and gearing up to be a Professional Makeup Artist.

Chandni’s course did not provide a kit for professional use but she is well equipped with all the amazing brands of makeup and brushes like MAC, Sephora, Lancome, NYX, Makeup Forever, Kryolan, etc. The course allows you to get a feel of a wide variety of products and find what you would be the most comfortable using.

Having been in the industry for over eight years and by the virtue of all her associations with international makeup brands, Chandni is like an encyclopedia of products. I never buy anything new for my kit without seeking her advice on the brand and its effects on various skin types. I feel if you have the right products and tools, half the battle is won! I found the course to be of such great help in understanding the cosmetic market of Delhi.

Her methodology is to demonstrate and make her students theoretically grasp the skills on alternate days while the other days are meant for putting into practice, whatever you learnt the day before. This makes the course pretty hands on. She also encourages taking notes.

The course encompasses the best of both worlds. I found myself imbibing sensibilities that combine the contemporary trends of the west along with the traditional Indian bridal styles. I believe that I can cater to the modern Indian women and give them those eyes and lips that they see on the runway, in a way that will suit their Indian skin tones.

The one thing about the course that really got me the exposure I needed, was accompanying Chandni to her shoots and watching her do the whole thing. It just added so much meaning to the whole learning process and gave me a taste of the real world. Seeing her work ethic with the models and the brides made me understand how one is different from the other and yet so similar.

After having completed this course, I went out in the industry looking for work and was pleasantly surprised to find that people responded very well to the fact that I trained under Chandni. I also got in touch with various big photographers who Chandni referred me to and thus began building a portfolio by doing test shoots with their students/assistants.

The whole experience is made even better when you have a really friendly and approachable teacher like Chandni who makes the environment very relaxed and conducive for bringing out the best artist in you.

The course was expensive to begin with but it wasn’t very long before I recovered what I paid. is a link for the detailed syllabus and other details.

Price: Rs 75000/-

Recommendation: The Professional Makeup Course by Chandni Singh not only equips a person to become a great bridal makeup artist, but also prepares one to undertake the contemperary trends of the west. It gives you the exposure and backing you need to start off on your own as a makeup artist and though the course may be expensive, if you are serious about becoming a makeup artist..I definitely recommend it.

I sure can vouch for what Tejasvini has written here about Chandni Singh. I did a personal make up workshop at her salon/academy at New friends colony and all that she taught and the way she demonstrated is phenomenal. I had previously done one with Vidya as well but felt Chandni Singh was more modern and easier to learn. She teaches you with so much passion and you will be floored by her at the end of the 4 hour class.

Married to a hairstylist & salon owner, my interest towards learning makeup and hair was inevitable. After searching high and low for the perfect course, I zeroed in on Chandni Singh’s Salon & Academy – a decision that changed the course of my life. I could relate to her makeup aesthetic – simple and chic, without the paraphernalia of loud and tacky flamboyance. After meeting Chandni, it was clear that she is the one we (my sister-in-law and I) wanted to learn from.
A normal batch comprises 7-8 students, but, as luck would have it, our batch consisted of only two students¬—my sister-in-law and me. We had all of Chandni’s attention and her vast repertoire of makeup knowledge to ourselves.
The course began with her telling us the basics of skin and the ways to prep it for makeup. Our knowledge, limited to knowing about just a foundation and concealer, she introduced us to so many new products for the base, such as primers and correctors. We were also taught the method to deal with different skin types –be it acne prone, dry or pigmented. Tips on how to apply concealer and foundation were so helpful. Highlighting and contouring, processes we had barely ever heard of, were taught and practiced. And, what a difference they can make! Being a novice, I had no idea about the various tools used for makeup. Under Chandni’s expert guidance, I can now identify and expertly use each product and brush.
The next few classes were all about perfecting the eyes. Right from a simple neutral toned look to the dramatic smoky eye and winged liner, she taught us all. Special emphasis was laid on the brows and how they can elevate a look.
Our classes then progressed to learning the nuances of the Bridal Makeup, complete with glitter and false lashes. We also learnt Vintage Makeup – which includes dark eyes and lips (almost gothic) and Fantasy Makeup – a riot of colours and exaggeration (had a blast doing this one!)
Along with the theory classes and practice sessions, we also accompanied Chandni to her shoots, where we got the exposure and insight into the world of fashion and glamour. It also helped us in building contacts which would further help us in our careers.
All in all, this course was an excellent and enlightening learning experience. Chandni taught us extremely well and told us everything, right down to the smallest of details. Every small detail was conveyed to us, every trick when using makeup was shared with us. An extremely helpful person, she cleared all our doubts and queries regarding the application of makeup.
It is after this extensive course that I have very successfully started my own business. I can truly boast of an A-list of clientele. All credit is due to the patient guidance of Chandni.
