Benefit That Gal Brightening Face Primer (2) Benefit That Gal Brightening Face Primer: Swatches & Review

Claimed to be the perfect partner to your foundation or moisturizer, That Gal caught my eye on the absolutely yummy-licious Benefit counter in Sephora at Singapore with not just its quirky packaging or cute name (all Benefit products have those in common ), but because of the pretty, soft, charming glow it gave me!

Scared to go over the top (OTT) with make up, I keep hunting for products that can give me that elusive ‘no make up’ look. Just happy, radiant, flawless complexion . That’s not asking for too much, is it? Meet Benefit That Gal, one of the products in my arsenal to do just that.

I know this one isn’t a one size fits all, there are probably an equal number of people who don’t like it for some reason or the other, but here are my 2 cents, given that I am on my 3rd bottle now!

What it is: A silky pink primer that makes skin appear smoother and brighter.

What it does: Prime your skin to pretty—go from dull to darling with “That Gal”! Wear alone for clear complexion radiance or apply before makeup for a smooth, effortless application. Plus you can use it to re-brighten throughout the day.

How to use:

  • Twist the base until the primer is distributed on the top.

  • Apply with fingertips onto the face.

  • Blend in an even, upward motion.

My experience with the product:

First off, how cute and adorable is that packaging! I know we’ve heard that a zillion times when it comes to Benefit packaging, but who can resist this? The product comes in a roll up / twist up tube with a transparent plastic cap, housed in a quirky, hexagonal box. As is typical with Benefit packaging, the tone of voice is fun, charming and a joy to read.

Coming to the product, the twist up mechanism needs a few turns for the first time for the product to come to the surface, but after that 2-3 twists do the trick. Its hygienic and convenient and allows you to control dosage to just the amount you want to use. However, the con of the opaque packaging is that you cant see how much product is leftover.

The consistency is light (not runny though), spreads / blends smoothly and gets absorbed quickly. Definitely brightens my complexion with a soft pink undertone and gives a nice, happy glow! Does even out the skin tone, but is not very helpful with concealing any pores (may be they want you to buy Porefessional for that!). So, it works well on its own without much other make up if you have reasonably good skin. Given the pinkish undertones, it would be a lot more flattering on lighter skin tones.

The fragrance is pleasant, non-intrusive and disappears rapidly.

Given that the functional task of a primer is to make your make up last, Benefit That Gal doesn’t seem to do much in that department.  It doesn’t seem to make my make up (primarily foundation and blush) last longer (my Make Up Forever primer does!). So strictly as a primer, this has less utility.

What Works:

  • Brightens, gives a pinkish glow
  • Evens out skin tone
  • Pleasant fragrance
  • Pretty packaging

What May Not Work:

  • Not very helpful on pores
  • Doesn’t seem to help make up last longer
  • Opaque packaging makes it difficult to track usage

 Rating: B+

Price: USD 29 (The official website offers free international shipping over USD 125 purchases)

Recommendation: I am on my 3rd bottle for That Gal because it gives a great a healthy, luminous, pinkish glow on its own but isn’t much use as a primer! Biased towards lighter complexions, it is worth the splurge only if you have reasonably well behaved skin and wont use it as a typical primer!

Benefit’s packaging is always such a treat to the eyes. However I did not like this primer at all. It really didn’t do anything for me. I’m loving Porefessional though! Gorgeous clicks <3

Shilpa April 8, 2014 at 3:32 pm

Doesn’t do much as ‘primer’ certainly :) Thanks Lisha!

Sounds like an interesting product.
Wondering if it similar to Clarins Beauty Flash Balm which claims on the similar lines minus the primer part. More than a primer I think it will be a great no makeup look buddy.

Hi MissoPeep, I have the Clarins Beauty Flash Balm and prefer that for its more natural look, but there are no pink undertones in that one which I love here :) A post on that coming soon!

Not a good much for my skin tone. I like the Illamasqua primer whenever I do occasional use one! :)

Nice packaging. But whats the point of a primer if it doesn’t make the makeup last longer?

I loved the packaging :)
A little afraid as I am medium skintone, maybe i would not suit me :(
What say Shilpa? Please help

Shilpa April 18, 2014 at 9:35 am

Hi Anupama, it is definitely biased towards lighter skin tones with its pink under tones. Best to try at the counter before making a decision…may be it works! Benefit MUAs are quite sweet and helpful usually :) good luck!
