If you have seen ” The Devil Wears Prada” , you would know that Miranda Priestly’s character is loosely based around Vogue Editor Anna Wintour. She is the ultimate authority on high fashion, and one arch of her eyebrow is said to have destroyed fashion design careers. When it comes to who she puts on the Vogue Cover therefore, nothing but A list actresses, models and fashion trend setters.
The latest Vogue cover however has Kanye West and his baby mommy Kim Kardashian gracing the cover. So whats the big deal about it? Well for a magazine that has stood for high fashion, Kim K and Kanye aren’t really known for their ‘ high fashion’ choices . She is the first Reality Tv Star to make it to the Vogue cover (for the record she follows names like Naomi Campbell, Rihanna and a bunch of other supremely talented women in the world of fashion and entertainment)
Tweets such as
” The last ounce of respect I have for Anna Wintour is now gone”
” What was Anna Wintour thinking?
” Is this an April fools joke? ”
“Thats it. Im cancelling my Vogue Subscription right now”
ran thick and fast through social media. There has been this near outrage directed towards Wintour over the entire thing. She in turn has defended it saying that as a magazine , they feature those who define culture at any given moment and at the moment Kim and Kanye are influencing the way we look at the world.
Naomi Campbell was asked what she thought of the Vogue cover and she said “NO comment. Im a fashion model, to be on the cover of Vogue for me was a huge milestone, a defining moment in my career so ummm… yeahh “. In return when she was asked if that meant she thought they did not deserve the Vogue cover she said ” You said that. Im being politically correct”. OUCH.
Whaddya think? Is this a big deal about nothing? Or did Vogue dilute its “Vogueness” by putting Kim and Kanye on it?
