So, recently Maybelline launched the pretty hyped Lip Blurs as Lip Gradation in India and since I’m always eager about new launches from Maybelline, I added the Lip Gradation lip colour to my vanity. Lip Gradation is inspired by the Korean ombre lip which I’m not too fond of for reasons of my own but we’ll get to that later in the review.
The product comes in 8 variants, viz. Red 1, Red 2, Pink 1, Pink 2, Mauve 1, Orange 1, Coral 1, Fuchsia 1.
The colours are pretty much self explanatory, Red 1 is a brick red colour, Red 2 is a cherry red colour, Pink 1 is a soft pastel pink, Pink 2 is a fierce dark pink, Mauve 1 is a pretty mauve tone shade, Fuchsia 1 is a bright fuchsia, Coral 1 is a beautiful Coral whereas Orange 1 is a soft not too bright orange.
I’m not too pleased by the shades in this range since they are pretty repetitive and I’ve got Maybelline or other brand lipsticks in the same hues. I specifically bought Pink 2, since I didn’t have a nice dark bold pink. Also, I’m not too impressed by the names they provided to the Lip Colours. I think having a nice name, attracts women to buy something from a range. Naming shades just by a colour and/or number seems too boring.
Claims : Our unique cream matte pencil with vivid color and blurring smudger. Create your look from full on bold to softly blurred. Why You’ll Love It? Undefine the rules of color with Lip Gradation cream matte pencil and blurring smudger. The cream matte pencil feels extremely smooth and comfortable on lips while the blurring smudger means you can create your own looks from full-on bold to softly blurred. Lip Gradation comes in 8 shades ranging from vivids to neutrals.
How to use the product : To achieve the softly blurred look, apply color in the center of your top and bottom lips. Using the smudger, gently blur the color out towards the edges of your top lip and then bottom lip.
Packaging : The product comes in a cylindrical tube form or crayon which is retractable. At the back, there is a sponge which can be used for lip blurring and getting the ombre lip effect.
My take on the Lip Gradation lip colour by Maybelline : I really like this product BUT not for what it’s actually supposed to be. I find that blurring makes your lips look washed out or as if the lipstick is missing and is in patches. Plus, the sponge provided cannot be used over and over again due to hygiene issues. So, I don’t really use the product to get an ombre lip. Since the product is in a really thin crayon form, I like to use it to line my lips and also use the product solely as a lip colour.
It gives a nice matte finish and stays for upto 6-8 hours even after you’ve eaten without any touch-ups. The product is really matte so it dries out your lips easily, so using a lip balm underneath is necessary. The product sticks to your lips until you remove it with a makeup remover. The shade Pink 2 is an amazing deep dark pink. It just brightens up the whole face as soon as you use it.
Overall, I find the product amazing as a lipstick rather than a lip blurring product.
- Amazing staying power.
- Abundantly available.
- Can be used as a lip liner.
Cons of Lip Gradation lip colour
- Quantity offered at the price.
- Repetitive colours.
- Not in favour of lip blurring and the product is no good for it.
- Can dry lips.
Verdict : A –
Price : INR 500 for 1.25 gms
Recommendation : If you’re looking for a long lasting lip liner or lipstick, I totally recommend this product. It’s matte and it lasts long too.
