Guest Review by Sreeparna Ganguly (Skin type- Combination to oily, acne-prone; Skin tone- Fair)

Tinted lip balms are my second favourite lip-products after lipsticks. As I have very dry lips I need lip moisturizers throughout the year. I have tried lip balms, jellies and butters of various brands but during times of need I have seen myself reaching out for Maybelline ones most of the time. Today I am going to review Baby Lips lip balm in the shade Berry Sherbet from the Spiced Up! range of Maybelline. This range of Baby Lips was said to have been designed especially for Indian women who have naturally pigmented lips and need more sun protection. Let’s see how it fared.

Claims : With every application lips are reborn and feel supple, plump, moisturized, giving you intense care. Maybelline promises ‘Lip smacking colors that pack a punch’ with this Spiced Up! range. Also said to be ‘Dermatologist Tested’ and ‘Allergy Tested’.

Tantalizing flavours specially created to suit Indian preferences, Deep shades specially designed for sun-kissed Indian skin tones for a smack of translucent color. Intense 12HR Care: Adult Strength formula with coconut oil, vitamin-E and SPF-20. Moisturizes lips for 12HRs.

Packaging : This lip balm comes in a retractable bullet kind of packaging that has a small plastic cap on the opening. The actual balm bullet resides within a cardboard outer packaging that contains all the important information regarding the product. The packaging is quite similar to the regular Baby Lips balms from the same brand and label graphics are also of a similar kind. The bullet colour matches the tint of the balm and the label graphics are milky white. Overall the packaging is cute looking, handy and travel-friendly.

Shade : In the Spiced Up! range of Maybelline there are three shades; Berry Sherbet, Tropical Punch and Spicy Cinnamon. I am reviewing the Berry Sherbet variant today. Although its name has a ‘Berry’ attached to it; the shade is reddish-brown. This kind of shade looks flattering on every skin tone due to the warmness of its tint.

Pigmentation : This lip balm has awesome pigmentation. It is more pigmented than some earthy toned Elle 18 lipsticks like Cinnamon Bun and Rusty. The strong tint will show even on pigmented lips. Considering the price point, it is a huge plus point in my opinion. That is why it has become my first choice for muted daytime looks.

Texture : I find this particular range of Baby Lips richer and denser than the other ranges. The balm stick is also softer than most chap-stick style lip balms available in the Indian market. It has a melting tendency if kept out of the refrigerator during summer.

Fragrance : It has a nice and mild sweet aroma. I could find no ‘berryness’ in its fragrance yet it soothes my senses.

Staying Power : The tint stays intact for a maximum of 2 hours without any meal (not even a drink!). After that the tint starts to die down evenly.  I have used it overnight and after 8-9 hours my lips were noticeably pigmented and moisturized. That is why I think the 12HR care claim by the company is true to some extent.

Effectiveness : Firstly this lip balm has SPF-20 that is quite high for a lip product. Due to the thicker consistency this lip balm is very moisturizing. It locks the moisture and makes my lips looking plump if applied for a longer period of time. It truly gives softness to my severely chapped lips. It softens the dead cells making the lip scrubbing process easier. Whenever I get dark lips due to under-nourishment I do a few overnight applications of this product and I am sorted. When I am applying it as a lip colour I just swipe it once or twice but for maintenance purpose I do 3 swipes. It feels sticky if applied too much.

Pros:

  • Awesome pigmentation
  • Has SPF-20
  • Locks in moisture and makes lips soft and plump
  • Nice Fragrance
  • Pocket-friendly

Cons:

  • Melts in warm weather
  • Feels heavy on lips
  • Ingredient list is not mentioned

Verdict : A-

Price : INR 175 for 4 gm.

Recommendation : I would recommend this lip balm to anyone who wants a heavy duty lip moisturizer with a nice and rich glossy brownish tint. This lip balm would be helpful in healing and softening up severely chapped lips.
