When it comes to matte lipsticks, I am very fascinated with matte lip creams. I have been using Miss Claire soft matte lip creams but they are not available easily. So I was very happy to know that our very own Indian makeup brand Lakme has launched their own line of matte lip creams in the 9 to 5 range. I got two of them for myself recently. So, today I am sharing my review on Lakme 9 to 5 weightless matte mousse lip and cheek color in the shades Blush Velvet and Plum Feather.

Packaging : It comes in a pretty rose gold colored cylindrical plastic tube with a metallic rose gold screw cap. The color theme matches their 9 to 5 line. The tube is housed in a rose gold cardboard box which carries all the information along with the shade name. The only drawback of this packaging is that there is no color code attached so it is difficult to find the desired shade from a bundle of lipsticks. The doe foot applicator has a pointy tip with a hole in the middle. This helps in taking out decent amount of product with which you can precisely line the lips and fill them in one go (without going back to the tube again and again). The cap shuts tightly so it is travel friendly too.

Blush Velvet : It is a dusky pink nude for my skin tone. I have heard that this shade is the closest dupe for MAC Mehr. I think it will complement fair skin tones, so dusky girls can give this a miss.

Plum Feather :  It is a perfect vivid plum-y pink shade that suits all Indian skin tones.

Smell : They smell like vanilla cup cakes.

Pigmentation : Decently pigmented, 2-3 swipes give opaque coverage. The colors are easily buildable, so they give medium to full coverage. I find the shade Blush velvet a little bit patchy which is not the case with Plum feather.

Texture and Formula : It lives up to its name mousse; the texture is soft and creamy. It glides on the lips like a dream. It has no shimmer or sheen as well. The formula is a little drying after a few hours of application like other liquid matte lipsticks. Though it is very soft and mousse-y when applied, after a few seconds it sets down to a complete matte finish. I would suggest proper exfoliation and moisturization before it putting on.

Staying power and color pay off : They both stay put for almost 5-6 hours with light snacks and drinks in between, but do not survive a full meal. After completely washing away the dark shade i.e Plum feather, I find that it nicely stains my lips. This suggests a good color pay off especially in the darker shades. I did not really apply them as a cheek stain, so I cannot say anything about that.

Pros :

  • Soft creamy formula.
  • Well pigmented and opaque.
  • Gives flat matte finish.
  • Pretty shades that complement fair to medium skin tones.
  • Work as a cheek stain also.
  • Decently priced, easily available online as well as in local stores.

Cons :

  • Not color coded
  • A little drying on the lips.

Verdict : A

Price : Rs. 575 for 9 gm.

Recommendation : I am very happy that an Indian brand has launched lip and cheek stains in the affordable category. Their texture is quite like a mousse. Having said that, these can be drying on the lips and I would have liked it more if they were priced a bit lower (according to the quality).
